Gerald Rafael

Gerald Rafael, a lifelong martial artist, began training in Okinawan Karate between the ages of 7 and continued until he was d14. In 1996, he began studying Filipino Martial Arts under his father, Grand Master Gabriel Rafael, and later helped establish the group Upakan Bara Bara in 2000. In addition to his FMA training, Gerald began studying Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art, in 2009 and, through years of dedication and practice, earned the rank of Professor. Gerald is a 2-time WEKAF World Champion and a 2-time GSBA World Champion. He has also coached several students who went on to become World Champions in both organizations. His martial arts journey took him to the Philippines in 2004, where GM Gabe introduced him to Sir Bobby Tabimina while competing in the WEKAF World Championships in Cebu, Philippines.

 

In 2006, Gerald met Master Jojo Ygay and began training every Friday Night in Fremont, at GM Gabe’s garage. Those training sessions became the foundation for establishing the West Coast Chapter of Tabimina Balintawak in the United States.

 

Through years of competition, training, and mentorship, Gerald continues teach and promote Filipino Martial Arts while dedicating himself to mentoring the the next generation of martial artist.
